Small Stone: January 17, 2013

The cold snap abated.
With just a few hours of warmth
the scraggly street-magnolia
burst into bloom, literally overnight!
Last year’s leaves have not fallen.
Yet, it is full of Spring.
I felt such a burst of joy─
I laughed out loud. Thanks, Tree.

  1. Oh, joy! I'm smiling, too, at this seeming miracle. Is it addled - has it mixed up the seasons?

    1. They always seem to bloom very early here. They are not native to the west coast. There is one tree in Golden Gate Park that I used to drive by going to work over the years and was always surprised when it bloomed so early. This one, truly was not in bloom yesterday in the morning when I went by. The surprise is what was so joyful to me.

    2. I have no idea if this makes a difference, but I saw two other magnolias in the Mission neighborhood today with a burst of blossoms...both were on the west side of the street. That would protect them from the ocean generated winds and also give them warm, morning sun. Just speculation.

  2. Two generations in co-existence. Nice.
