Spring can be gray

Stub ends of last year’s reeds
pushing through a vernal pool.
Summer’s crushing aridity and heat
will provide a new crop of sticks next Spring.
The seasons here are reflected in such plain things,
sometimes. Not everything is green or blooming
to welcome us into a time of rebirth.

  1. That's what it's about - taking notice of the "plain things" which signal change. Is that a pencil sketch? Very nice.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Barb. This is actually a photo of reeds in a vernal pool at Jepson Prairie on the Sacramento Delta in California. A wonderful place!
