to catch the weak warmth of mid-winter sun
remembering other lives on the savannah
when he was king

Nearly stumbling
his left leg twisted inward,
compassion falling into sympathy
into pathos as he walks toward me.

Laughing, he is laughing.
His little daughter is laughing.
His beautiful young wife is laughing.

Lost in misunderstanding,
I nearly stumble, then smile.
