A hint of green

More about trees...life giving
and breath supporting. Yet,
today’s winter mantle is all about beauty.
Evergreen, the pine stands tall,
the oaks and native undergrowth pause
for a brief winter’s rest. A hint of green
assures me that spring is near.

A new view

From the train window
I saw a mountain, towns
and Spring blooming fields
for the first time.
It was a landscape
that I had driven through
a hundred times
and saw the road.

A little boy

A little boy, perhaps 2 or 3
hair nearly white, curling in ringlets,
intense blue eyes, observant,
but shy. It was me, I thought
as I sat across from him on the train.
In reflection, it was me only
from one photo and reminiscences of great aunts:
simply an observer of then and now.

Misty day

Cold winter mist surrounding me
like a cloak. Walking in the shelter of trees
and overhangs, inward and chilled.
Suddenly, behind the western clouds
a moment of warmth as the hidden sun sets.

Bird language

Chattering birds in an overgrown bush
near a Victorian cottage…I stopped
to identify the birds and their song. (Wrens)
As soon as it was clear that I remained below, a threat,
the chatter changed into a back and forth warning.
Branch to branch, lower to upper. I moved along.

Across the street, an entirely different and joyous bird
was singing in the sundown. I paused.

Busy sidewalks

Sidewalks crowded and unruly
confusing, folks walking in patterns I can’t discern.
Not quite dark, but nearly a full moon lurking over the City.
Could that be the cause?
Perhaps I am just out of step.
Perhaps.

Sunset

Sunset is glorious, yet ending.
Tonight, I hear my grandmother
singing “sunset and evening star,
and one clear call to me”. Oh,
to achieve life so simple,
just one clear call.
