Hummingbird protector

A loud, cawing raven perches on the roof edge,
seemingly a predator in this quiet neighborhood.
Undaunted, the tiny Anna’s hummingbird streaks round
annoying the huge black bird…until finally the “threat”
departs.

Last Spring, the harassment was directed
at an invader hawk. Hummingbird protector!

To the end of the pier

Contemplating the fishing pier with its faltering pilings,
I wonder how many of my own are weakened
by life’s storms, from the constant motion of its waves.
How many solid posts do we really need
to go all the way to the end?
Probably not all of them.

A hint of green

More about trees...life giving
and breath supporting. Yet,
today’s winter mantle is all about beauty.
Evergreen, the pine stands tall,
the oaks and native undergrowth pause
for a brief winter’s rest. A hint of green
assures me that spring is near.

A new view

From the train window
I saw a mountain, towns
and Spring blooming fields
for the first time.
It was a landscape
that I had driven through
a hundred times
and saw the road.

A little boy

A little boy, perhaps 2 or 3
hair nearly white, curling in ringlets,
intense blue eyes, observant,
but shy. It was me, I thought
as I sat across from him on the train.
In reflection, it was me only
from one photo and reminiscences of great aunts:
simply an observer of then and now.

Misty day

Cold winter mist surrounding me
like a cloak. Walking in the shelter of trees
and overhangs, inward and chilled.
Suddenly, behind the western clouds
a moment of warmth as the hidden sun sets.
