Small Stone: January 12, 2013

Sunset, highlighting the icy clouds
streaming down from the Gulf of Alaska.
It is so seldom cold here that we treat it
like a gift. May have frost nearby tonight.

But, it is not a gift for the animals and people
who do not have warm shelter in this City
of Saint Francis.

  1. Love this shot - I can see the windows glowing with the sunset. Both extremes -heat and cold - are hard for those without shelter. We are so cold here right now that I didn't even venture outdoors today. The hearth was a popular spot!

    1. I am so aware during chilly times like these that we don't need to give up what we have, but we have to be so aware of what we can share. I would bet it is really cold at 10,000 feet in the Rockies. We are just having frost warnings.

  3. Nice to reflect on The City's namesake on a cold evening. You do honor to his memory.

    1. I would love to hear what St. Francis would say about the great disparities here in this City. Probably would make his rejection of his family's wealth a minor spat compared to what he would require of us to be a follower!

  4. I love how the buildings in your photo seem to huddle together against the circle of late sky, and the warm hues of sunset reflected in the windows as if to keep the cold out.

Enjoying this cold is a luxury for those of us with the good fortune of having roofs over our heads. I never take that for granted. Thank you for your words spoken with the care of Saint Francis.

    1. Thanks, Cynthia. I do so appreciate where I am, too. But love that I live in the City of St. Francis, rather than just San Francisco. Means a lot more to think of that heritage...and the task of even living up to it in the tiniest of ways.
